The EU has issued a nickel directive called EN 1811. This is to prevent allergies and hypersensitivity associated with contact with nickel. The limit for the amount of nickel that may leak per cm2 per week over a 2-year period is up to 0.5 µg/cm2/week. Where a margin of error up to 0.88 µg/cm2/week is acceptable.
